Technical Editing (TE) SIG
The STC Boston Technical Editing (TE) SIG is a Special Interest Group that brings together and supports individuals around Boston who provide technical editing services to clients on a contract basis or to employers. All those who edit technical (including computer-related, engineering, scientific, medical, legal, and financial) material, either full-time or as part of other work responsibilities, and those who are interested in technical editing are encouraged to learn and share knowledge and experiences with other members.
The STC Boston TE SIG is a chapter version of the Society-level Technical Editing SIG, which maintains a Web site offering additional information and resources.

Program
"This Time fer Sure!”: Mobile Content and Technical Communications
Presenter: Neil Perlin
Description
After several false starts, the industry is trying again with mobile devices. The rationales are the same as they've been in the past: In an increasingly mobile society, information is increasingly likely to be needed in the field, out of the office.
In this presentation, we'll look at the rationale for mobile devices in tech comm, why past efforts failed, and why this time may be different. We'll then look at the vendor market segments, some of the technical standards within that market, and how tech comm might begin working within that market. We'll end by looking at how two specific, familiar tools, Flare and RoboHelp, allow or may allow us to develop content for mobile devices without needing to buy new authoring tools, and look at the effects on information design and single sourcing. (Note that the discussion about RoboHelp depends on when Adobe releases its new conversion script.)
About the Presenter:
Neil has 31 years’ experience in technical communication, with 25 in training, consulting, and development for various online formats and tools including WinHelp, HTML Help, CE Help, JavaHelp, WebHelp, RoboHelp, ForeHelp, Flare, and many now known only in legend.
